User Guide Series: Homer and Jean Blair Collection of United States Patent Models Sewing Machine

Sewing Machine, U. S. Patent 22,143, November 23, 1858, Hiram W. Harkness, Bristol, Connecticut.

The invention relates to moving cloth through a sewing machine using a pressure foot and vertical clamp.

The 8" x 7" x 9" model is made of black painted wood, with gold-colored ornate decorations, that are typical of old sewing machines, and a dull gold colored metal. The machine is made to sit on a table, and appears to be for commercial use. The model is in good condition except for small repairs on a corner of the base and on a part below the base.
