IP at Pierce Law: Clinics & Summer Institutes

Pierce Law’s annual summer programs include the Intellectual Property Summer Institute, the Pierce-Tsinghua Summer Institute, and the Advanced Licensing Institute. These Institutes offer class discussion on current topics and trends facing intellectual property managers, lawyers and law students.

Intellectual Property Summer Institute (IPSI)

The Intellectual Property Summer Institute (IPSI) offers a variety of seven-week courses covering U.S. and international intellectual property law and practice, and a one-week interactive course in Mediation of Intellectual Property and Commercial Disputes. The seven-week courses cover such topics as telecommunications, music management and licensing, film and theater, copyright and multimedia licensing. Other courses relate specifically to licensing or financing of intellectual property, including treatment of intellectual property under the Uniform Commercial and Bankruptcy Codes and Electronic Commerce. Advanced Licensing Institute (ALI)

Immediately following the Intellectual Property Summer Institute, Pierce Law presents an intensive four-day overview of licensing practice worldwide, the Advanced Licensing Institute (ALI). ALI offers attorneys, technology managers, entrepreneurs and students from the United States and abroad an opportunity to exchange information and perspectives, and to network in an academic environment designed to promote a free flow of information and ideas. In 2002 ALI seminar topics included intensive reviews of business arrangements involving patents, trademarks and copyrights, their negotiation and implementation, actual licensing situations and financial considerations. Pierce-Tsinghua China Intellectual Property Summer Institute (CHIPSI)

The Pierce-Tsinghua China Intellectual Property Summer Institute is the first program offering ABA-accredited courses in intellectual property law in China. The first annual CHIPSI program was held in June and July, 2002 at the School of Law, Tsinghua University, in Beijing and Jiaotong University in Xi’an, China. Students enrolled in up to 6 credits of coursework in International Intellectual Property Law, Intellectual Property Law of China, Chinese Legal System, and IP in Mergers and Acquisitions. A natural outgrowth of the Pierce Law commerce and technology concentration, and following the successful summer institute abroad model already established, Pierce Law will initiate the eLaw Summer Institute at University College Cork, in Cork, Ireland un the summer of 2005.

The eLaw Summer Institute, with its focus on the emerging policy and law of the information age, is designed to be a critical learning experience for the lawyer of the 21st century, who must have a much greater understanding and appreciation of the domestic and international aspects of this growing and evolving body of law.
